How to resize an image without losing quality

Downscaling is safe. Upscaling is not. Everything else is about not making it worse.

The phrase hides two very different operations. Making an image smaller discards pixels you did not need, and done once, from a good original, it is visually lossless. Making an image larger asks software to invent detail that was never recorded — no algorithm can recover what the sensor did not capture.

So the real question is: how do you downscale without introducing avoidable damage, and what should you realistically expect when you have to go up?

Langkah

  1. 1

Downscale in one step, from the original

Resize once from the highest-quality source you have. Repeated resizes each resample the image and compound softness, so a 4000px original going to 1200px should go there directly, not via 2000px.

  2. 2

    Keep the aspect ratio locked

Most visible "quality loss" after a resize is actually distortion. Lock the ratio, set one dimension, and let the other follow. When the target shape genuinely differs, crop or pad rather than stretch.

  3. 3

Separate the resize from the re-encode

Resizing does not degrade an image; saving it as a low-quality JPEG does. If the result looks bad, check your export quality before blaming the resize.

  4. 4

Upscale only when you have to, and modestly

Standard interpolation makes an image bigger and softer — it cannot do otherwise. Going beyond about 2× looks obviously blurry. AI super-resolution predicts plausible detail instead, but it is invention, not recovery, which matters if the image is evidence of anything.

Export to PNG for intermediate steps

If you are resizing as one step in a longer edit, keep the intermediate lossless so you are not stacking JPEG generations.

Sharpen after downscaling, not before

Downscaling softens edges slightly. A light sharpen afterwards restores the perceived crispness; sharpening first just gets averaged away.
